A Matter of Pride A game by Ethan Locke [[Soon it shall begin.]] [[The Otaryn Lugrimarek.]] [[Why is this one special?]] [[The year's most coveted event.]]One of the most coveted events of the entire year. Not only do the victors of each bracket have a guaranteed enlistment into the Arch-Knights recruitment program, it’s also the best event to test one’s teamwork capabilities. These last 9 days have been hard fought, but we are finally here. Once we defeat Torro and his team, my team and I will be crowned the champions. Not like it will be much of a fight. Torro and his team have been charging headfirst into every match without considering any of the consequences. My team and I know better than that. The heat of battle makes it difficult, but we always try to have each other’s backs. [[I hope mom is watching.]] [[I'll soon achieve mom's dreams for me.]] [[I can't wait to make mom proud.]]The Otaryn Lugrimarek. It’s undoubtedly the most anticipated event of the year. Thousands of people from across the Empire travel to this event. About 5,200 showed up to compete this year. A decent step up from the 4,600 that showed up last year. This year we faced off against 450 other nobles. The poor fools. They spent all year training just to have their faces squashed into the dirt by me. All that’s left is this final match. Once I crush Torro and his team, I will become the next Otaryn Lugrimarek champion. Soon the final preparations will be complete, the fight will begin, and I will be one step closer to accomplishing my goal. [[I'll soon achieve mom's dreams for me.]] [[I hope mom is watching.]] [[Maybe mom knows something I don't.]]There are other events throughout the year that guarantee a spot in the Arch-Knight training program, but there is something about the Otaryn Lugrimarek that draws the most people in. I think it’s because each class in society has their own division within the tournament, so everyone effectively fights on even ground. There are six divisions altogether, but those divisions do make this one of the longest events of the year. For upper nobility, the event only takes 9 days to complete, but for the lower nobility brackets, the event lasts up to 19 days. I couldn’t imagine being here for 19 days. There’s no other form of entertainment besides the continuous mind-numbing matches. [[Maybe mom knows something I don't.]] [[I hope mom is watching.]] [[I can't wait to make mom proud.]]The Otaryn Lugrimarek. I’m surprised it’s as popular as it is. What is there left to watch after we upper nobles finish the event? No one knows the names of the majority of the lower noble houses, and who would bother watching the peasants fight each other? Although I’ve never understood why the Arch-Knights recruit the victors of the peasant brackets either. None of them would stand a chance if they stepped into my league. Unless they get paired against Torro. Then they have a decent chance at winning. I can’t believe he made it to the final match. I’ve lost count of how many times he was nearly eliminated because of his ego. [[I can't wait to make mom proud.]] [[I'll soon achieve mom's dreams for me.]] [[Maybe mom knows something I don't.]]I scan the contestant’s waiting room. It’s a large rectangular room being lit up by floating torches shaped like chandeliers. Stone benches sit at each end of the room. Torro and his team, Otto, Medri, Amos, and Ulmor, sit on the other side. “Yo, Erias.” I look behind me as Iani approaches me. He wears a gentle smile on a head of sandy blond hair. “Where were you?” I say. “I was helping set up the final preparations for our match,” says Iani. “Did you learn anything useful?” I say. “Unfortunately no,” says Iani. “Are your final preparations done?” I say. “Also no,” says Iani. “I’ll admit, it’s pretty foolish of me.” [[Speaking of being foolish.]] [[Great. Now we just—oh no.]] [[Do we have a problem?]]Torro and two of his goons, Amos and Medri, approach us. Iani quietly groans. “Here we go.” “Can never go far without the duo of idiots can you, Torro?” I say. A smile tugs at the corner of Torro’s lips. Amos and Medri scowl. “Who are you calling—” Amos growls. Torro grabs in-front of Amos as if he’s catching his words. He looks Amos in the eyes. “Be quiet. A little insult like that shouldn’t get you so riled up,” says Torro. Amos nods his head and glares at me. Torro turns back to me. “As for you, can you really make such insults when your bunk buddy is sitting right there?” says Torro. [[That's all you've got?]] [[Is there anything else?]] [[Leave him be, Iani.]]She’s been dreaming I win this for as long as I can remember. I hate following in dad’s footsteps, but mom wants me to become a powerful warrior. Winning this is the first step in accomplishing that goal. “Torro, doesn’t stand a chance,” I mutter. “Torro, doesn’t stand a chance doing what?” I jump and wheel around. Iani stands behind me with an eyebrow raised. “Nothing,” I say. “Got lost in thought for a minute. Where were you?” Iani points behind him, “I was helping the event organizers finish their final preparations for the match.” “What about your final preparations?” I say. Iani flaunts a pair of leather gloves he’s wearing. “I’m no fool.” [[Great. Now we just—oh no.]] [[Seriously?]] [[Speaking of being foolish.]]Torro and two of his friends, Amos and Medri, approach us from the other end of the contestant waiting room. Iani puts on a soft smile, “Well look who the cat dragged in.” “What do you want, Torro?” I say. “What, I can’t say hello to my younger brother?” says Torro. “We’ve been here for 9 days, and you haven’t approached me once. Why approach me now?” I say. Torro shrugs his shoulders. “Just checking to make sure you don’t quit last second on us again.” My eyes narrow. “That was two years ago. What’s it have to do with now?” Torro breathes heavily. “What is with you and the twenty questions today?” [[Why are you acting so strangely today?]] [[That's all you've got?]] [[Is there anything else?]]She loves to watch this thing all the way to the very end. I stare down the corridor that leads to the arena. The afternoon sun makes it impossible to see past the exit. Muffled screams from the cheering fans echoes down the corridor. “Whatcha looking at?” I look behind me and see Iani standing there. He smiles gently as he stares at me. “Trying to decide what to do until the match starts,” I say. Iani takes a seat next to me. “You could’ve helped finish the final preparations for our upcoming match.” “I needed to finish my own final preparations,” I say. “Your own—we might have a problem,” says Iani. [[Seriously?]] [[Do we have a problem?]] [[Great. Now we just—oh no.]]“Deadly serious.” I look up and see Torro and two of his friends, Amos and Medri, standing before me. Iani groans as I sigh. “What do you want, Torro?” I say. “I wanted to see if you’re ready to quit,” he says. I raise an eyebrow and look at Amos and Medri. “That requires an escort?” Amos and Medri sneer, but a glance from Torro causes both of them to stop. “Real intimidating guys,” I say. Torro narrows his eyes at me. “Feeling confident are we?” Iani and I exchange glances and shrug our shoulders. “You could say that,” I say. Torro takes a step closer. “Shall we fix that?” Iani stands up, “Save it for the fight.” [[Leave him be, Iani.]] [[Why are you acting so strangely today?]] [[That's all you've got?]]I’ll finally get to prove that I was meant to win this thing. I look across the contestant’s waiting room and look at Torro and his team, Otto, Medri, Amos, and Ulmor. Any minute now, and I get to humiliate all of them. “What’s the plan?” I glance to the side and see Iani approaching. “Don’t need a plan against them.” Iani shrugs his shoulders. “It wouldn’t hurt to have one.” “What else is there to plan besides knock them out of the arena?” I say. Iani sighs. “I don’t know. Use that foolish ego of yours to throw Torro off his game.” “I don’t have an ego,” I say. Iani snorts. [[Do we have a problem?]] [[Seriously?]] [[Speaking of being foolish.]]“I would say so.” I look up as Torro and two of his goons, Amos and Medri, approach us. I sigh. “Look everyone. Dad’s favorite is here.” Torro sneers. “And don’t you forget it.” I lightly shake my hands like I’m in shock. “Will that be all?” Torro scoffs. “You won’t be acting so tough for very long.” I yawn. “Why’s that?” “Because Dad will be watching today,” says Torro. I raise my eyebrows and stare blankly at Torro, “Okay. And?” Torro sputters. “And he’s going to watch me humiliate you today.” “Oh no, God’s preserve me,” I say, exasperated. “I’m not afraid.” Torro’s nose twitches as he gently shakes his head. “Keep talking.” [[Is there anything else?]] [[Leave him be, Iani.]] [[Why are you acting so strangely today?]]“Do I need more?” says Torro. Iani rolls his eyes. “Yes, since demoralizing your enemy is the first step for victory. Isn’t that what dad’s always telling you?” I say. Torro narrows his eyes and takes a step towards me. “What dad talks about is having teamwork. Something you wouldn’t understand,” says Torro. “Maybe we just have different definitions of teamwork,” says Iani. “Stay out of this, Iani. Unlike you, our dad isn’t a glorified politician,” says Torro. Iani’s eyes narrow. “Not all of us want to sit at the king’s side one-day like our father.” Torro scoffs. “Then you’re a fool.” “A fool who’s going to crush you,” I say. “I’ll crush any fool.” [[There is more to fighting than just team work.]] [[Iani and I exchange quizzical looks.]] [[I'm sure you will.]]“He’s got a point,” says Iani. Torro rolls his eyes and sighs. “I guess I’ll take the easy win. Let’s go.” Torro and his goons and walk back to their bench. “Easy win for me, you mean,” I mutter. “At least he’s hopeful. It’ll make it a fun fight before we crush him,” says Iani. I snort. “You and I have different definitions of fun.” Iani pats me on the back. “The people did come to see a good fight.” I sigh. “That’s true. Mom will be watching me today.” “There you have it,” says Iani. A voice echoes through the room. “Contestants, please make your way towards the arena.” [[Time to make mom proud.]] [[You ready to impress the people?]] [[I head towards the arena.]]The rest of our team, Malos, Ulri, and Turas, join us as we walk down the corridor. Thunderous applause echoes around us from the crowd. The corridor gives way to a gigantic open field. Thousands of people cheer from bleachers that surround the arena. Armed guards stand arms width apart in-front of them. Above us, the announcer inaudibly shouts into a floating magical ball. Four healers stand on floating platforms above the arena. Two more stand on the sideline. The arena itself is a sandy pit with a series of wooden pillars standing 10-15 feet tall in the center. They create an 18 x 18 square, with five feet between all of the pillars. [[It's time.]] [[This is it.]] [[It's now or never.]]Torro and his team make their way to the far end of the arena. My team and I make our way to the base of the pillars closest to us. I point my palms to the ground and gusts of wind extends downwards from each palm. The wind raises me to the top of a pillar. Iani follows close behind me. His body glows blue as his aura sticks to the pillar like glue, helping him climb. He stands on the pillar to my left. “Iani, I want you to focus on taking out Amos,” I say. “What about you?” says Iani. I lock eyes with Torro, who stands across from me. “I’ll fight Torro,” I say. [[CRACK!]]Two balls of wind push the bottom of my feet and propel me forward as we all race towards one another. Iani and I exchange a nod before Iani veers towards Amos. I smirk as Torro heads right at me. His aura glows red around his feet. It grabs each pillar Torro lands on. I slightly cup my hand just behind and to the side of my back. A rapidly spinning ball of wind forms in the cup. As Torro makes his next jump, I thrust my hand forward and the ball rockets towards Torro. His aura extends and grabs hold of a pillar just before the ball hits him. It has no effect. [[Well damn. Someone’s been training.]]“What happened to all that bravado earlier,” says Torro. “What bravado?” I say. Torro smirks. “Need your entourage to be here to act tough?” Hundreds of windy needles form beside my head. They rapidly fly towards Torro, who jumps out of the way. Torro launches a flying kick at me, but I effortlessly dodge him. “I don’t need Iani to crush you,” I say. Torro feints a jump to the left but uses his aura to catch himself and throw himself at me. My eyes widen as a gust of wind from my feet lifts me into the air as I summersault over him. He does a backflip to try and hammer kick me. [[I bend down and slap the pillar.]]A powerful jet of air erupts from my back and slams Torro’s chest. Torro grunts. “You little—” he says as he flies over me. He grabs hold of a pillar and stabilizes himself. Torro makes a tsking noise as he pulls himself up. “Did you think a little party trick like that would work?” says Torro. “One can hope, but I’m glad it didn’t,” I say. “Why’s that?” says Torro. “Because Iani wants an entertaining fight,” I say. Torro uses his aura to lunge at me. Wind erupts from my feet and pushes me as I jump to the right. “Iani, ready to take over?” I say. “Heads up,” says Iani. [[I jump forward one pillar.]] [[I slip my leg out.]] [[I duck.]]A rock hurtles past where I was just standing. I look over and see Medri standing a couple of pillars behind Iani and Amos. He stands with his hands cupped above one another. Medium-sized rocks form between his hands before suddenly launching themselves forward. My eyes scan the arena and I see Ulri trying to break a rock that pins him to a pillar. “Damn it,” I say. I look back at Medri and a rapidly spinning disc of wind forms under my feet. “Don’t get distracted,” shouts Torro as he charges at me. “I’m not,” I say as I do a backflip. The spinning disc rushes forward and swipes out Medri’s feet. [[I smile to myself.]] [[I clasp my hands together.]] [[Iani, go after Torro.]]Medri screams as he slips off the pillar. He tries to catch himself, but he’s too slow. Torro watches Medri fall before calmly looking at me. “You’re going to pay for that,” he says. “You’ll be joining him soon enough,” I say. I slash my arm towards Torro and a powerful blade of wind shoots towards him. Torro effortlessly ducks under the attack and jumps at me. I flip over him and kick him in the back to propel myself onto another pillar. Torro stumbles forward but his aura quickly catches him. I clasp my hands together, and as I open them, a powerful jet shoots forth and slams into Torro. His body begins to glow. [[Damn aura states.]] [[I reach my right hand across my shoulder and point my palm at Torro.]] [[I need you to listen to me.]]Torro turns and launches himself at me, much faster than before. I hit him with the same powerful jet of wind and jump backwards, using the wind to throw me farther than usual. The attack harmlessly disintegrates against Torro’s shield as he charges at me relentlessly. “Iani, I could use some help right now,” I say. A few moments pass. “Iani?” I look behind me and see Iani engaged in a fierce brawl with Amos. A blade of wind flies between them when I slash my hand vertically at them. Iani and Amos jump apart and look at me. Iani’s eyes go wide when he sees Torro, and Amos looks irritated. “Need some help?” says Iani. [[If you could.]] [[Can you keep Torro distracted?]] [[Hundreds of windy needles form beside my head.]]Torro launches himself and tries to hammer kick me. I jump back and shove my palm forward. A blast of wind bursts from my hand. The attack disintegrates on his aura shield. “How pathetic,” says Torro. He lunges at me again the moment he touches the ground. Iani jumps in-front of me and kicks Torro in the chest, sending him flying backwards. Iani’s body glows blue, similar to Torro’s. “You focus on him, and I’ll take on Amos,” I say. “Got it,” says Iani before he chases after Torro. “Do you honestly think you have what it takes?” I lock eyes with Amos, who stares at me with an irritated sneer. “Guess we’ll have to see.” [[I cut the air and create a wall of wind.]] [[Let's go.]] [[We need to separate the two.]]Amos is sent careening to the side as the wall of wind hits him. He catches himself before he can fall. He glares at me. “If you want to lose so badly, all you had to do was ask.” I smirk. “Don’t get cocky.” Torro tries to hammer punch me, but Iani catches him. The fight between Erias, Iani, and the atulan warrior reaches its climax. Iani and Torro share another exchange. “Of course the weakling needs you to fight his battles,” says Torro. Iani punches Torro’s jaw. “Funny coming from the coward hiding in an aura shield.” Torro spin kicks Iani in the stomach, sending him flying next to me. “How goes it?” I say. “It goes,” says Iani, springing to his feet. Amos tries kicking my head. [[I smirk and slap the pillar.]] [[Time to end this.]] [[All according to plan.]]Like I did against Torro, I bend down and slap the pillar. A powerful jet of wind erupts from my back and slams Amos in the chest. The attack catches him by surprise, and he lands on his back on one of the pillars. His aura grabs hold of the pillar before he can slide off. I flip towards him as I clasp my hands above my head. I swing my hands down as if swinging a hammer, and a hurricane of wind hurtles down from the sky. Amos uses his aura to throw himself onto another pillar before the wind can connect. He launches a flying round house kick at my head. [[I duck under Amos's kick.]]I watch as Amos flies harmlessly overhead. When he is directly above me, I go to slap my hands against the pillar. “Erias, look out!” shouts Iani. Before I can react, a boot collides with the side of my head. I groan as the world begins spinning, and I gasp when I slam into the side of a pillar. I reach down and a gust of air holds me in the air as I grab the pillar. As I try to shake the dizziness, someone jumps on my fingers. I cry out in pain and let go of the pillar. My spell dissipates because of my lost focus, and I plummet towards the ground. [[I wheeze as the air escapes my lungs.]]I roll over and see Torro smirking at me. Iani tries to kick him, but Torro catches his leg. “Crap,” says Iani. Torro throws him out of the arena. Two small burst of wind shove me as Iani lands where I was. Iani stands up and dusts himself off. “That didn’t go according to plan.” I groan as I sit up, “There was a plan?” Iani reaches a hand towards me. “I figured since he was focused on you I’d be able to surprise him.” I take his hand and pull myself up. “Was that with or without considering the heightened reflexes?” Iani scratches his head and sheepishly says, “Without.” [[We make our way out of the arena.]]We look back as a scream echoes through the air. Turas falls out of the arena as Torro, Amos, and Ulmor hunt down the rest of my team. “Sweetheart, are you okay?” I turn around and see my mom approaching us. “Yes mom.” “Do you think we still have a chance?” says Iani. I shake my head. “No. Ulri is a skilled fighter, but he doesn’t stand a chance against Torro. Neither does Malos.” Torro and the others close in on Malos. Malos tries summoning ice shards, but it’s too late. Otto shoots a ball of fire at Malos. It explodes and Malos is sent flying out of the ring. [[See.]]“You have to give the man credit. He’s a talented atulan warrior,” says Iani. I roll my eyes. “He got lucky.” Iani gently pats me on my shoulder. “That’s one way to look at it.” I shake his hand off. “How would you look at it?” “The way I see it, a skilled fighter led his team to victory today,” says Iani. The announcer's voice booms through the air. “Ladies and gentlemen, meet our new Otaryn Lugrimarek Nobility champions! A big congratulations to Torro Desia and his ability to lead his team to a decisive victory.” The crowd erupts into thunderous applause as Torro lifts a golden trophy above his head. [[At least dad will be proud of him.]]“I’m sure he will be,” says Mom. Iani and I turn to look at her. “Sorry I failed you today,” I say. Mom gently grabs my cheek. “Sweetheart, you didn’t fail me today. I’m proud of you.” “Speaking of pride, how am I going to face the people after this?” says Iani. I chuckle. “Scared they won’t forgive you?” Iani sighs. “It’ll depend on if they liked the show.” “The show of you being an idiot and getting your butt kicked?” I say. “It’s better than losing focus in the middle of the fight,” says Iani. Mom grabs my shoulder and smiles. Iani pats my back. “We’ll get them next time,” he says as he begins to walk away. [[Title Page]]“Enough with the questions, Erias,” says Torro. His right hand clenches into a fist for a moment. Iani and I exchange looks. “I think you need to sit down,” I say. “Amos, be a pal and go sit, Torro, down.” Torro points a finger at Amos, “Don’t even consider it.” “What’s got you so riled up right now, Torro?” says Iani. “That’s none of your concern,” says Torro. “Whose concern is it?” says Iani. Torro glares at Iani. “Soon to be yours.” Iani throws his hands in the air, “I’m just trying to help.” Torro sighs. “If you want to help, make sure this whelp doesn’t quit. Team work will be important.” [[Iani and I exchange quizzical looks.]] [[There is more to fighting than just team work.]] [[Must you antagonize him?]]“You sure?” says Iani. I nod my head, “He wouldn’t squander an opportunity to impress our dad by starting a fight here.” Torro scoffs but doesn’t say anything. I stare at Torro for a moment. “See what I mean?” Iani nods his head and sits back down. “Is that all, Torro?” I say. “Watch yourself out there,” says Torro. He begins to turn on his heel. “I could say the same to you,” says Iani. I drop my head into my hand. Torro turns back around. “What was that?” “I said I could say the same to you,” says Iani. “You’re the first one I’m knocking out,” says Torro. “Is that a promise?” says Iani. [[Must you antagonize him?]] [[I'm sure you will.]] [[Iani and I exchange quizzical looks.]]“You sure have a mouth today,” says Medri. I stare at Medri, shocked. “He speaks. All this time I thought you were a mute.” Torro holds up a fist. “Don’t dignify that. He’s trying to get under your skin.” Iani stifles a laugh. Torro glares at him, “Is there something funny to you? Iani takes a second to compose himself. “I’m sorry, it’s just the irony of what you just said.” “What about it?” Torro growls. “Can you not see the same thing is happening to you?” says Iani. Torro looks at me, and I shrug my shoulders. He closes his eyes and takes a deep breath. “It doesn’t matter. I’ll still win,“ says Torro. [[I'm sure you will.]] [[Must you antagonize him?]] [[There is more to fighting than just team work.]]“What’s going on today?” I say. “Dad will be watching us,” says Torro. “How many people is this event being projected to?” says Iani. “Your guess is as good as mine,” says Torro. He turns to me, “Don’t embarrass our family today. Let’s go.” Torro turns on his heels and walks away. His friends right behind him. “You doing okay, Erias?” says Iani. I watch Torro cross the room and sit at their table. “I’m fine. Just surprised the man has the time to watch.” Iani’s eyes light up. “I wonder if the event is being projected to the royal palace.” A voice echoes around us. “Contestants, it’s time to enter the arena.” [[You ready to impress the people?]] [[Cheer.]] [[I head towards the arena.]]“Keep your lapdog in check, Erias,” says Torro before again turning on his heel and walking away. Amos and Medri follow close behind him. “What, am I not allowed to tease him?” says Iani. I look at Iani, “That’s not the point. He’s the strongest atulan warrior on their team, and we have no plan of attack.” Iani shrugs. “It will make things more entertaining for the audience.” “It’s still important that we win,” I say. Before Iani can respond, a voice echoes around us. “All contestants, please make your way towards the arena. The rest of our team, Malos, Ulri, and Turas, stand up with Iani and me. “Let’s do this thing,” says Iani. [[Cheer.]] [[You ready to impress the people?]] [[Time to make mom proud.]]Torro’s eyes flare at me. “Can it,” he says before turning on his heels and leaving. Amos and Medri run to catch up with him. Iani chuckles. “I think the plan worked.” I scoff. “Whatever you say.” Iani grabs my shoulder and shakes it. “Lighten up would you. You won’t win the crowd’s favor by being so tense.” I shake Iani’s hand off me. “I don’t care about the crowd’s favor like you. The only one out there whose opinion I care about is my mom’s.” “How would she feel about the way you’re acting right now?” says Iani. Before I can say anything, a voice echoes around us. “All contestants head towards the arena.” [[I head towards the arena.]] [[Time to make mom proud.]] [[Cheer.]]“I’m always read to do that,” says Iani. “Let’s go,” I say. Our team, Malos, Ulri, and Turas join us as we walk outside. Two armed guards stand on either side of the corridor as we make our way into the field. Thousands of people cheer from the stone bleachers that circle the arena. The arena sits inside a sandy pit and is made of an 18 x 18 square of wooden pillars that stand 10-15 feet tall. Each pillar has a five-foot gap. I watch the healers as they circle the arena on their floating platforms. They are all rummaging through their leather bags as they rush to complete their final preparations. [[It's now or never.]] [[Time to win this thing.]] [[This is it.]]We all cheer in unison as we make our way down the corridor. The thunderous cheers of the audience quickly drown us out. Iani pats me on the back. “Let’s go give the audience what they came to see,” he says before running towards the arena. He’s gone before I can say anything. I give an exasperated sigh as I make my way onto the field. The crowd goes crazy as Iani waves at them. I shake my head and look at the arena. It sits inside a large sandy pit and is made up of thick wooden pillars that stand 10-15 feet tall. They form an 18 x 18 square with a five-foot gap between each pillar. [[This is it.]] [[It's time.]] [[Time to win this thing.]]Iani and my team, Malos, Ulri, and Turas, follow closely behind me. The audience’s cheers thunder through the corridor as we make our way out. “It’s a miracle they haven’t screamed themselves hoarse,” I say. Iani grabs me around the shoulder, and we raise our fists into the air as we step onto the field. The crowd explodes in cheering as we wave at them. The arena sits in a large sandy pit and is made up of an 18 x 18 square of wooden pillars. Each pillar stands 10-15 feet tall with a five-foot gap between them. The announcer stares down at us from his floating platform as the audience drowns him out. [[Time to win this thing.]] [[It's now or never.]] [[It's time.]]“Should have quit while you had the chance,” Torro sneers as he walks by us. He and his team head to the other side of the arena. I gently shake my head as I make my way towards one of the pillars. Two gusts of wind form under my feet and lift me to the top of the pillar. Iani lands on the pillar next to me a single jump, his legs glowing blue. “Is learning to jump how you’ve chosen to master your aura state recently?” I say. Iani chuckles. “Every trick has its use. I know Torro won’t see it coming.” “That’s true,” I say quietly. Louder I say, “We’ll rush Torro together.” [[BOOM!]]I make my way to the base of a pillar and place a hand on it. //This will be the last time I climb one of you.// Iani steps up to the pillar next to me. His feet glow blue as he leaps onto the pillar in a single jump. “Show off,” I say as two gusts of wind form under my feet and lift me into the air. They quickly raise me onto the pillar. “A little slow, don’t you think?” says Iani. “Slow and steady wins the race,” I say. “What’s the plan?” says Iani. “We take out Amos first. Torro will be easier to fight if we aren’t worried about him,” I say. [[THWACK!]]As I make my way to the base of a pillar, I flatten my palms towards the ground. Two balls of wind form under my feet. They explode against the ground and launch me into the air. Gusts of wind burst from my palms and give me an additional boost as I flip onto the platform. Moments later, Iani jumps onto the pillar next to me. His feet glow blue as his aura wraps around the pillar. “Showoff,” says Iani. “You’ve mastered your aura state?” I say. “Not entirely, but enough,” says Iani. “That’s good. I want you to fight Torro then. Wear out his aura state, and I’ll finish the job,” I say. [[BLAM!]]“FIGHT!” shouts the announcer. Iani and I nod at each other and take off together straight for Torro. Torro charges straight down the center at us while Amos tries to flank us. His feet glow red as his aura catches each pillar and throws him forward. I horizontally chop my left hand with my right. A spear of wind hurtles towards Torro from the sky, but he’s too quick. The spear harmlessly crashes into the sandy pit and throws sand everything. Iani’s fists begin to glow blue as we near each other. “Keep an eye on Amos. He’s flanking your side,” I say. Iani slightly turns his head to the left. He nods at me. “I see him.” [[Save your acrobatics for now.]]“START!” shouts the announcer. Iani and I immediately veer to the left. Torro looks at us confused as he makes his way down the center. Amos sees us and begins heading towards Torro. “No you don’t,” I say as I do a jumping roundhouse kick onto the next pillar. A powerful ball of wind flies from the bottom of my foot when I unleash the kick, and it flies rapidly at Amos. He sees it coming and narrowly jumps backwards to another pillar in time. “Don’t hog all of the glory,” says Iani as his blue aura begins reaching for the pillars in-front of us and dragging him along. “Iani, stay close. We must fight together,” I say. [[Damn it Iani.]]“GO!” shouts the announcer. Iani stands still as I immediately jump to the left. He takes off as well once I’m out of his path. Even from a distance, I can see Torro’s eyes narrow as Iani heads straight for him. “Don’t fail me,” I say. “Don’t worry about me. Torro will be defeated by the time you beat Amos,” says Iani. I look over and see Amos charging directly at me. Before jumping to the next pillar, I do a leg sweep towards Amos. A blade of wind flies out from where I swept the air and races towards Amos. He sees it coming and effortlessly jumps over it. He smirks at me as we draw near. [[Don't get cocky Amos.]]“You got it,” says Iani. Torro warcries as he launches a punch at me. Iani jumps between us and slaps Torro’s hand away before kicking him in the chest. He grunts as he flies backwards. “Of course the little whelp needs you to save him,” says Torro. Iani flips into the air and punches down at Torro, who quickly backflips out of the way. “I wouldn’t call that saving your acrobatics,” I say. Iani laughs, “You call that acrobatics.” “What are you two blabbing about,” says Torro as he jump kicks at Iani. Iani ducks under Torro, and I jump backwards and extend my palm towards Torro. A gust of wind hits his chest. [[I watch Torro land where he started from.]]Iani ignores me as he charges headfirst at Amos. The two jump onto the same pillar and begin weaving each other’s punches. “Erias, keep your hotheaded brother off me,” he shouts. “What happened to the plan,” I say as I watch Torro leap towards us. Iani kicks Amos in the face and sends him flying backwards. “Help me knock Amos out of the ring,” he says. “I don’t think so,” Torro shouts as he tries to roundhouse kick me. I duck under him and slightly cup my hand to my side and behind my back. I thrust my hand forward and a ball of wind flies towards Amos. He sees it coming and jumps over it. [[I pull my hand towards me.]]“Why shouldn’t I?” he shouts as he lunges for me. I twist my hand while simultaneously raising my hand in the air. A tornado of wind sprouts from the ground and catches him and flings him to the side. “There you go, Erias!” shouts Iani. “Don’t you ignore me!” roars Torro. “I’m still here,” says Amos as he again lunges for me. “Again?” I say. Amos’s legs glow green, and he uses his aura to lung at me faster than before. I hammer arm the air, and a fist of wind punches Amos onto a pillar. He jumps up and dusts himself off before I can do anything else. “Still not good enough,” he says. [[I smirk.]]Iani attempts to punch down on Torro again, but Torro kicks him in the chest and sends him flying. I spread my arms above my head and gently throw them towards a pillar. Iani glides onto it as if he’s on a slide. Iani pats down his chest. “Nice job, Erias.” I jump onto the same pillar as Iani as Torro prepares his next attack. I clasp my hands together and spread them apart. A dome of wind surrounds us and expands in all directions. Torro’s entire body glows red as his aura grabs the pillar. “Attacking him head on won’t work. We need to distract him,” I say. “Look out!” [[I duck.]] [[I raise my hand into the air.]] [[I jump forward one pillar.]]The ball of wind retracts and hits Amos in the back as he lands. He stumbles forward and nearly falls, but Torro rushes to his side and grabs his collar. Torro sneers at me. “Look at you needing to use treachery to win,” says Torro. Iani jumps next to me. “That didn’t work.” I huff. “I told you it wouldn’t. We need to stick to the plan.” Iani sighs. “I suppose you’re right.” Torro and Amos begin to flank us. “Keep Torro distracted. I know how I can take out Amos.” Torro and Amos prepare to lunge for us, but hundreds of windy needles form beside my head and fly at them. “Duck!” [[I slip my leg out.]] [[I jump forward one pillar.]] [[I raise my hand into the air.]]I cross my arms across my chest, my hands hovering just above my shoulders. Before I can launch my attack, a boot slams into my side which sends me flying to the side. I redirect my mana to my palms and use a gust of wind to catch myself. “Sorry about that,” says Iani. I look up and see Torro standing where I just was as I lower myself onto another pillar. Iani jumps at Torro, who catches him. Amos tries to jump in, but I reach out my hand as if grabbing something and pull my hands towards me. Iani flies to me. “Any luck on the aura state?” I say. “No, he won’t—get down!” [[I raise my hand into the air.]] [[I duck.]] [[I slip my leg out.]]As I duck down, Iani’s fist glows blue, and he punches through a rock that was hurtling at my head. I look ahead and see Medri smirking at me. He stands with his hands cupped over top one another. Mid-sized rocks form between his hands and hurtle towards us. “Where’s Ulri?” I say. “There,” says Iani, pointing to our right. I look over and see Ulri pinned to a pillar by rocks. “Any last words?” says Torro. I look at Torro with Medri standing directly behind. Amos stands on our left flank. “Iani, feint an attack on Amos and draw Torro’s attention,” I say. As Iani launches the feint, I act as if I’m throwing a ball. [[I do a jumping spin kick at Amos.]] [[I clasp my hands together.]] [[I smile to myself.]]A rock hurtles past where I was just standing. I look up and see Medri standing in-front of us. His hands are cupped in-front of his chest. Medium-sized rocks form between his hands before he launches them at us. I watch Torro as he flanks our right and see Ulri pinned by rocks in the background. “Damn it,” I mutter. “Iani, I want—” Iani jumps at Torro with a flying kick. I shake my head as Amos lunges for me. As I jump backwards, I fully straighten out my arms before cupping my hands like I’m holding a ball. A large ball of wind forms in my hands and it flies at Medri. [[I clasp my hands together.]] [[I do a jumping spin kick at Amos.]] [[Iani, go after Torro.]]A tornado envelops Iani and I, and a rock is caught in the tempest and flung to the side. The tornado dissipates when I drop my hand. Medri stands in the distance behind Torro and Amos. He stands with his hands cupped in-front of his chest. He creates mid-sized rocks before throwing them at us. “You focus on Torro for now. The two scrubs are mine,” I say. Iani raises an eyebrow. “You sure about that?” “I am. Amos should be eliminated, but Torro stopped me,” I say. “What about Medri?” says Iani. “The man knows one spell,” I say. I cup my hand in-front of my lips and puff into it. [[Iani, go after Torro.]] [[I do a jumping spin kick at Amos.]] [[I smile to myself.]]A ball of wind rushes across the arena and smashes Medri in the chest. He grunts as the ball takes him off his feet and knocks him out of the arena. Another ball of wind shoots from the bottom of my foot as I kick towards Amos. Amos sees the ball coming and steps in-front of Iani as a shield, whose back glows blue as the wind slams into him. The ball disintegrates against his aura. “Sorry about that, Iani,” I say. Iani hook punches Amos in the jaw. “It’s all good.” Movement catches the corner of my eye, and I duck as Torro’s boot swings where my head just was. [[I reach my right hand across my shoulder and point my palm at Torro.]] [[You're a stubborn one, aren't you?]] [[Damn aura states.]]A dome of wind envelops me, and as I extend my arms back out, the dome expands. Iani and Torro use their aura to hold onto their pillars. Torro holds Amos in place. Medri screams as the large ball of wind throws him out of the arena. Iani looks at me, “Are you trying to knock me out of the arena?” “No. I needed to keep those two in place while I took Medri out,” I say. Amos looks behind him before turning to glare at me. “We didn’t need that weakling anyways,” says Torro. He and Amos charge at us simultaneously. I slice through the air, and a blade of wind smashes Amos. [[I need you to listen to me.]] [[You're a stubborn one, aren't you?]] [[I reach my right hand across my shoulder and point my palm at Torro.]]As Medri goes to throw another rock at us, a jet of wind smashes through it and hits Medri in the chest. He cries out as the jet takes him off his feet and sends him careening out of the arena. Iani’s feet glow blue as he does a flying roundhouse kick at Torro. Amos lunges for me, but two bursts of wind throw me into the air as I flip over him. As I circle over Amos’s head, I thrust my palm forth and a gust of wind slams Amos into the pillar. After I land, I flick my wrist at Amos and a gust of wind slams into his side. He doesn’t move. [[You're a stubborn one, aren't you?]] [[Damn aura states.]] [[I need you to listen to me.]]A gust of wind erupts from my hand and slams into Torro’s chest. He grunts as he is sent spiraling backwards. I look towards Iani and Amos as they continue to throw punches at each other. “Iani, duck,” I say as I clap my hands together. A large blade of wind flies at them, but Iani and Amos both duck under it. Iani recovers first and kicks Amos in the chest. Sending him onto another pillar. He goes to jump after him, but Torro cuts him off. Iani jumps backwards to me. “These two just won’t stay down.” “We need a decisive hit,” I say. [[Can you keep Torro distracted?]] [[If you could.]] [[Keep Torro distracted for me.]] “I’m listening,” says Iani. I cross chop the air and two blades of wind fly at Torro and Amos. As the two dive out of the way, I swing my hands out, and the blades chase after them. “Charging them head on is useless. The two are too resilient to knock out alone,” I say. “They aren’t—” “Iani, you’ve been charging Torro head on since the beginning and have only managed to exhaust yourself,” I say. Iani takes a deep breath. “What do we do?” “We need to work together,” I say. “Team effort, remember?” Iani sighs and nods his head. “Team effort.” Torro and Amos make their way towards us. [[Hundreds of windy needles form beside my head.]] [[If you could.]] [[Keep Torro distracted for me.]]Amos staggers to his feet, “I’ll take that as a compliment.” “Erias, move!” shouts Iani. I jump to the side and feel something narrowly miss me. I look over and see Torro standing there, his body glowing red. Iani jumps next to me. “It’s about time,” I say. “Pardon?” “His aura state. It’s about time he used it,” I say. Torro turns to us. Fury consumes his eyes. “He’s stronger than I thought he’d be,” says Iani. “Stronger maybe, but he can’t maintain that state for long,” I say. Iani raises an eyebrow, “Is that so?” “Not if he can’t stay focused,” I say. “What do you need me to do?” says Iani. [[Keep Torro distracted for me.]] [[Can you keep Torro distracted?]] [[Hundreds of windy needles form beside my head.]]Torro and Amos jump at us simultaneously, but I cross my arms in front of my chest and thrust my hands out. A powerful torrent of wind erupts in all directions, knocking Torro and Amos backwards. “I know how we can them out,” says Iani. “How’s that?” I say. “Amos has been struggling to use his aura state this entire time, and Torro needs to focus to maintain his,” says Iani. “Two simultaneous attacks. That will be difficult with the two of them attacking together,” I say. Torro and Amos get to their feet. “Exactly. Let’s use that against them,” says Iani. “We’ll take out Amos first since he’s the weakest link,” I say. [[We need to separate the two.]] [[I turn towards Amos.]] [[I cut the air and create a wall of wind.]]The needles rapidly fly at Torro and Amos, who rush to one another. Torro’s body glows red, and the needles harmlessly dissolve against his aura. He stands in-front of Amos. I smirk, “Ready to fight Torro one last time?” Iani devilishly smiles. “What’s the plan?” “We need to take out Amos. It’s clear he hasn’t mastered his aura state yet,” I say. Iani looks at me quizzically. “What does that have to do with Torro?” I grab Iani’s shoulder. “Torro is the only reason Amos is here. I need you to keep Torro away long enough for me to eliminate Amos.” Iani stretches his head side-to-side. “That won’t be a problem.” [[Let's go.]] [[I cut the air and create a wall of wind.]] [[I turn towards Amos.]]“That’s it?” says Iani. “I can’t effectively fight him in that state,” I say. “That’s true,” says Iani as his body begins to glow blue. Torro smirks and lunges at Iani with breathtaking speed. Iani responds just as fast. I jump over them towards Amos. Amos smirks as his body glows green. “Powerless against aura states are we?” I smirk. “I didn’t say powerless.” Amos charges at me faster than before, but I drop into a crouch, my hands at my sides. As I thrust my hands forward, two tempests of wind shoot forth and send Amos flying backwards. “Where did that come from?” says Iani. “You have a lot to learn,” I say. [[I turn towards Amos.]] [[We need to separate the two.]] [[Let's go.]]“How?” says Iani. Torro and Amos try to outflank us. Torro moves to the left, and Amos moves to the right. “We quick attack Torro to stagger him and hit Amos with everything we’ve got. You got the energy for a full aura state?” I say. Iani smirks. “I always have the energy.” “Let’s do this.” “I don’t know what you’re plotting, but it won’t work,” says Torro as he charges us. Iani catches Torro and holds him in place. “Says you.” Torro’s arms strain as he tries to overpower Iani. Iani’s aura latches onto the pillar. “This will be the end of you,” growls Torro. “Erias, it’s now or never,” says Iani. [[I cup my hand at my side and just behind my back.]] [[All according to plan.]] [[Time to end this.]]Iani and I rush at Torro and Amos simultaneously. The two look at us surprised and jump apart. Iani’s hands and feet glow blue as he charges Torro. Torro’s hands and feet glow red as he meets Iani head on. I do a front flip and kick at Iani. A ball of wind flies at him, but he dodges it. “Where did all of this come from?” says Torro. “From knowing we’re about to win,” says Iani. Iani tries to leg sweep Torro, but Torro jumps out of the way. Torro flips and does a spin kick at Iani, who catches him. Iani roundhouse kicks Torro in the stomach, but it has no effect. “Is that all?” [[All according to plan.]] [[I smirk and slap the pillar.]] [[I cup my hand at my side and just behind my back.]]“I was talking to you, if you didn’t notice,” I say. Amos stands up and spits on the ground. “Your arrogance is pissing me off?” “So?” I say with a smile. Amos screams and charges me again. His aura state disappears mid-charge. I chuckle to myself. “They never learn.” Amos launches a flying kick. I slide under him. “Looks like your protégé is growing weak,” says Iani. Torro snarls and punches Iani hard in the stomach. He hammer arms Iani in the back as he keels over, dropping Iani to his knees. Torro turns to lunge at me, but Iani grabs him. “Our fight isn’t over,” he says. “Let me go you peasant,” says Torro. [[Time to end this.]] [[I cup my hand at my side and just behind my back.]] [[I smirk and slap the pillar.]]I thrust my palm forward and a ball of wind shoots forward and hits Torro in the face. At the same moment, Iani’s entire body glows blue and he punches Torro with all his strength. “Now!” I shout. Iani flips around and flying kicks Amos at blinding speed. I clasp my hands above my head and jump into the air. As I smash my arms down, a giant torrent of wind slams Amos out of the arena. Erias and Iani knock the atulan warrior out of the arena. [[Same as before.]]“What was that,” says Amos as he prepares to charge at me. I look Amos in the eyes and smile. Amos glares at me and war cries as he charges. I shove my hand out as I lift it into the air. A tornado erupts from the ground and catches Amos. His screams are drowned out as the tornado picks him up and throws him. He wheezes when he slams into the side of a pillar and falls to the ground. “Damn it!” roars Torro as his body begins to glow red. Iani jumps backwards and follows suit. “Is someone upset they lost their friend?” Torro grins wickedly at Iani. “I’m going to enjoy this.” [[This will work, but the methods are questionable.]]I strike my palms against the pillar, and a gust of wind erupts from my back, throwing Amos into the air. I flip into the air, swinging my leg down into a hammer kick. A powerful gust of wind strikes Amos and slams him hard into a pillar. He wheezes heavily as he rolls onto his back. “It’s been fun, Amos,” I say. I flick my wrist and Amos is hit by a gust of wind. Again, it has no effect on Amos. “What the?” I say. “Erias, watch out!” shouts Iani. I jump forward just in time to dodge Torro, but Amos leaps to his feet and tackles me. “Erias, hang on,” says Iani. [[It's too late for me.]]Torro’s face goes red in fury and his body glows red. He assumes a defensive fighting stance as Iani and I prepare to charge. After what feels like an eternity, all three of us charge forward simultaneously. Iani’s body glows blue, and he charges Torro head on. The two clash at blinding speed. I jump into the air and hammer kick Torro’s head. He roars as he goes to grab me, but Iani catches his arms. Before he can break free, I pull Torro into a choke hold. As he struggles to breathe, Iani punches him in the stomach, knocking the wind out of him. His aura dissipates, and we throw him out of the arena. [[I stare at Torro.]]Torro flies at Iani with incredible speed. Iani barely has enough time to respond to Torro’s opening attacks. //Now’s my chance.// I quickly flank around Torro. His fury slowly giving him an edge. “A little help, Erias,” says Iani as he desperately tries to fend off Torro. “Hold on just a little longer,” I say. I position myself behind Torro and cup my hands in-front of my stomach. A ball of wind forms, and it begins spinning faster as I pour more mana into it. Torro lands a powerful kick to Iani’s stomach, and he keels over. Torro kicks him in the head and knocks him out of the arena. //Now.// [[I condense the ball by squeezing my hands.]]“Don’t be foolish,” says Iani. Amos tries to punch me in the face, but I weave out of the way. “I’ve got Amos. You focus on taking out Torro. He’s your fight,” I say. Iani grits his teeth, but he turns from me and charges after Torro. Amos continues his flurry of punches, but all of them miss. “How bravely idiotic of you,” says Amos. I cover my lips with both hands and blow hard. A gust of wind slams into Amos, but he latches onto the pillar with his aura. “That won’t work on me this time,” says Amos. I chuckle. Amos looks at me perplexed. “I don’t need it to,” I say. [[I wrap my arm around Amos's neck and bury his face in the pillar.]]Iani pats my back and cheers. “All that’s left is Otto and Ulmor.” I nod my head. “Let’s go free Ulri before we find them.” We make our way over to the pillar where Ulri is pinned by rocks. “Took you two long enough,” he says. “Shall we just leave you then?” I say. Ulri thinks for a moment. “Please don’t. These rocks aren’t as comfortable as they look.” Iani’s foot glows blue as he kicks the rocks to pieces. Ulri stands rubbing his wrists. “Thanks,” he says. “Not a problem. Now let’s go help Malos and Turas,” I say. We look across the arena and see the four engaged in a fierce magical brawl. [[They couldn't even take out one of us.]]I close my right fist and pull it behind my back. Then I thrust it forward and open my palm. A hurricane of wind erupts from my hand. It hits Torro directly in the bac and knocks him out of the arena. I look down and see Iani walking past my pillar. “I’m sorry, Iani,” I say. He shields his eyes and looks at me. “No need to apologize. An attack that powerful needed time to charge. I get it” “I’ll see you when we win this thing,” I say. Iani nods his head and makes his way out of the sandy pit. I look around and see Ulri pinned. [[I slash the air towards Ulri.]]Amos punches me in the gut, but I grit my teeth and refuse to let go. “The rest is up to you!” I shout. Two torrents of wind burst from the bottom of my feet and try shoving me backwards. Amos begins to scream from the pain of me pulling on his neck. “Let go of me, you whelp!” he shouts. I increase the mana pouring into the wind and pull on Amos’s neck even harder. His aura falters, and we are blasted out of the arena. Amos falls the side when we hit the ground. He sits up rubbing his neck. “You stupid fool.” [[I laugh as I watch Iani roundhouse kick Torro.]]“All thanks to the work of our valiant leader,” says Iani as he pats my back. “It’s a shame though. I was hoping for a better final fight from your brother.” “That wasn’t enough for you?” I say. “He’s a strong warrior. Being thrown out because of a choke hold feels anti-climactic,” says Iani. I wrap my left hand around my neck, and a disc of wind forms in my hand. I throw it towards Otto, who’s distracted fighting Malos. The disc slips Otto’s feet out from under him, and Malos blasts him with a ball of fire. It explodes and Otto is thrown out of the arena. Ulmor looks around utterly panicked. [[We win.]]A blade of wind flies across the arena and slashes through the rocks pinning Ulri. He stands up and shakes his wrists. “Thanks, Erias,” he says. I look to the other side of the arena and see the rest of my team engaged in a fierce magical battle with the rest of Torro’s team. “Let’s go. Malos and Turas need our help,” I say. Ulri nods and races to catch up with me. “You help Turas with Ulmor, and I’ll help Malos with Otto,” I say. “Understood,” he says. As we draw closer, I do a leg sweep towards Ulmor. A blade of wind shoots towards him and swipes him off his feet. [[I watch Otto fall out of the arena.]]“A stupid fool who just won this thing,” I say. Amos looks up and his face pales when he sees Iani beating Torro. “That’s not possible,” he says. I sit up with a groan. “Of course it is. Those two have been rivals since early childhood. There’s no clear stronger one between them.” Iani kicks Torro in the chest, and he lands onto another pillar. Before he can recover, Iani launches himself into the air and drop-kicks Torro in the face. Torro catches the edge of the pillar as he falls off. “It’s time for you to fall,” says Iani. He steps on Torro’s hands, who cries out in pain before falling. [[Victory for the fools.]]“It was a fun battle. Hopefully the audience enjoyed it,” says Iani. Malos and Turas begin to flank Ulmor as he runs from them. “After a final battle like that, how could they not?” says Ulri. Iani shrugs. “You never know what the people want half the time.” “I’m sure they’re happy their hero won,” I say. “Let’s quickly finish this and find out,” says Iani. “Malos, Turas, stop playing and finish him!” I shout. Ulmor locks eyes with me. Malos and Turas blast him out of the arena. The announcer’s voice booms around us. “Ladies and gentlemen, give a round of applause to this year’s Otaryn Lugrimarek champions! Congratulate Erias for his exceptional leadership skills.” [[Grab the trophy.]]Behind them, I see Iani and Torro playfully shoving each other on the sidelines. After all of that, and they are still ready for a fight. I’m surprised they haven’t killed each other yet. The announcer's voice thunders around us. “Ladies and gentlemen, give a round of applause to your new Otaryn Lugrimarek champions!” Me and the rest of my team head to the center of the arena where the announcer waits for us holding a golden trophy. The crowd roars in thunderous applause as we lift the trophy above our heads. I lift my first into the air. //We’ve finally done it mom. We’ve won.// “Good job, all of you,” I say. [[I head towards the arena sidelines.]]Amos looks crestfallen as he stares at Torro who wobbles, as he stands up. I look up and watch Iani run over to Ulri. //You’re a much more capable warrior than I am Iani. A lot more capable.// “Torro, are you good? What happened?” Amos says as he runs over. “I’m good,” Torro says, brushing himself off. “I lost focus at the end there.” The three of us walk out of the sandpit and towards the sideline. Iani and Ulri pass over us as they race off to help Malos and Turas. Torro sighs. “Four versus two. With Iani of all people still standing. I hate to say it, but we lose this year.” [[We make it to the sidelines.]]My team and I approach the center of the arena where the announcer waits holding a golden trophy. We hold it over our heads and the audience erupts into thunderous applause. “You can have this for now, Iani,” I say as I push the trophy into his hands. He smiles at me before running off towards the crowd. I watch him and smile before leaving the arena and joining my mom and Torro on the sidelines. Mom beams at me. “I’m so proud of you, honey. You did it.” I give her a hug. “Couldn’t have done it without you, mom.” Torro scoffs. “I’ll beat you next year.” He extends a hand towards me. “Next year.” [[Title Page]]Iani and Torro sit next to each other on a bleacher and laugh as I approach. Mom stands before them with tears in her eyes. “You did wonderfully sweetheart,” she says. She gives me a hug. “What part was wonderful? The part where he cheap shotted me, or the part where he sacrificed Iani?” says Torro. Mom gives him a stern look, but Iani and I start to laugh. “You’re right, I shouldn’t have sacrificed Iani like that. But aren’t you the one who taught me if you aren’t cheating, you’re not winning?” I say. Torro looks at me surprised. “Since when have you taken my advice?” “Since it helped me crush you.” [[Title Page]]We turn around and watch as Iani and Ulri flank Otto and Ulmor. Mom hugs Torro and I. “I’m so proud of you two,” she says. “But I failed,” I say. “Nonsense. You did perfectly,” she says. We watch as Otto and Ulmor are driven out of the arena. The announcer’s voice reverberates around us. “Ladies and gentlemen, give it up for this year’s Otaryn Lugrimarek champions.” “That should be me up there,” says Torro. “It should be us up there,” I say. “Us?” I nod. “We both lost because we got distracted.” Torro looks at me before turning towards Iani and my team as they left the trophy in the air. “True.” [[Title Page]]
